Brake Unloaded castors - advised for use by health and safety inspectors.

We get many calls from hospitals, doctors surgeries, labs and supermarkets asking for speciality castors like 'castors that allow a chair to be static until it is sat on'. They have been asked by safety officers to source such castors but mostly do no know the name of them. The reason they want these is because accidents can happen in the work place when someone starts to sit on a chair with freewheeling castors and the chair moves away from them as they are doing this, resulting in them falling onto the floor! If you replace your free wheeling castors with Brake Unloaded castors it will eliminate this from happening. A castor that is Brake unloaded will remain 'still' whilst it is 'unloaded' (not sat on), the brakes release once the chair is sat on and it becomes freewheeling whilst sat on. As soon as you stand up the brake comes on again. It is not a visible brake, it all works seamlessly internally. Don't just take our word for it, try them and help prevent accidents in the work place.

Measuring the Inside and Outside Diameter

With over 50 different chair feet and sizes available, we can understand that the sizes may sometimes be hard to understand and it's difficult to know exactly what chair feet you need. This blog has been designed to tell you how to successfully measure the inside and outside diameter of your insert. If you are still unsure, you can send it directly to us to measure and source a replacement. Although we have lots and lots of different chair feet and ferrules, we cannot 100% guarantee we will have your type of foot in.

To discover what chair foot is right for you is to firstly establish what product group you need, whether its inserts, ferrules or domed feet. All of the sizes on our website starts with tube outside diameter measurement first. To find the product you require, measure from the outside to outside across the centre of the tube. Once you have measured the outside, now do the same with the inside. Take the outside diameter and subtract the inside diameter then divide it by 2. This will give you the thickness of your tube.

When you have selected the shape of the insert (which go inside the tube) or the ferrule (which go outside thetube), the different size options will be shown using the drop down. The first measurement shown is the outside diameter (OD) of the tube and the last numbers represent the thickness of the tube that it will fit. For example inserts are ribbed. They have 2 measurements to show the variance in the wall thickness e.g. 19mm x 2.0/1.5 insert. The 19mm is the outside diameter measurement (OD). The 2.0 is the thickest tube wall thickness it will fit and the 1.5 is the thinnest tube wall thickness it will fit.

Tired or broken wheels on your divan bed can be replaced

Many bed manufacturers use a standard 50mm twin wheel castor on their Divan Bed Bases. You can check yours by simply pulling one out of your bed base, and measuring it, does it look like this with a stem like this. If so you can simply buy replacements from our website. This link is for the Hard Tyre version if you have carpets, just select the castor and use the drop down box to select the grip neck stem, and the socket to suit also, or choose the Soft Tyre version if you have wooden floors. Heavy Duty Tilt Feet - They are heavy duty feet that can take a massive weight loading of 100KG per foot. These adjusters are great where the floor surface is uneven and where making the item perfectly level is important.

Common Uses include: - Machinery, portable telescope mount, stands, conveyor belt systems.

Serated Adjusters - This type of adjuster have a ribbed outer edge allowing easy grip. They take a weight loading of 500KG per foot. These adjusters are fantastic where your tight on space.

Hexagonal Adjusters - These adjusters have a hexagonal base and taker a weight loading of 250KG per foot. These are ideal for small appliances or projects.

Measuring Stems

Measuring your stem is always a difficult one - the recommend tool to measure your stem is a set of vernier scales but not everyone has these in their draw at home so sometimes a standard ruler has to do!

It is very important to measure your stem accurately to ensure the stem fits into your chair or application.To ensure you order the correct stem size follow these simple steps. Measure the length of the stem that is coming out of the castor. The stem picture is a 11mm x 22mm, the reason being for this is that the width is 11mm and the stem length is 22mm. Always ensure you measure the widest part of the stem. If you have Vernier scales, this is a very accurate way of measuring the stems. (Shown in picture below)

We supply both threaded (screw-in) and circlip stems (push-in).

Soft or Hard Castor?

With over 30 + calls coming in a day, we asked our customer services team, what is the most common question you get asked?

The most commonly asked question to our team is 'how we do know if we need a hard or soft castor?'. As we get asked this question so often we thought we would write a short blog and answer the question for those of you who are pondering.

It's easy to tell what type of castor you need depending on the type of floor your application is on.

If you have any of the below flooring:

Tiles
Laminate
Oak
Granite
Bamboo
Stone
Vinyl

Then the type of castor you need is SOFT. The reason why a soft castor is suited better to the above flooring is, it will reduce noise pollution, prevent scratching and won't leave any marks. A hard castor is not suitable as it may mark the floor, create a lot of noise when moved and potentially ruin your lovely hard flooring. Act now and get our soft castors on your appliances. A castor is cheaper than a new floor!

If you have any of the below flooring:

Carpet
Rugs
Mats
Linoleum
Cork

Then the type of castor you need is HARD. The reason why a hard castor is more suitable than a soft, is that the rubber used on a soft castor may cause friction between the castor and the flooring making it difficult to glide and move the appliance. Hard castors will not pick up things as easily such as hair, pet fur and other debris - meaning hard castors will last longer on soft flooring than a soft tyred castor.

We often get calls from hairdressers and beauty salons complaining about the chairs becoming almost impossible to wheel around the salon because the wheels/castors have become clogged up with hair off the floor. We have been asked if there is way to remove the hair by prizing open the castor, unfortunately this is not an option due the way the castors are pneumatically pressed together for safe usage. Some salon owners have wasted hours removing the hair with scissors and tweezers. We have a solution that will not waste much of your time and not cost a fortune, and its a lot cheaper than replacing your chairs each time. We can supply you with replacement castors. Simply pull out the old ones and pop in some new ones! We sell a range or different castors to suit in 50mm or 65mm. The one important thing you have to do is ascertain the stem size of your current castor as there are universally two different ones 11mm or 10mm. Once you have established this we can supply replacements. You can also choose from soft or hard tyres, you may have Hard tyres which you find slide round on the salon floors, you can replace them with a soft tyred castors which will grip the hard floors better and prevent some sliding from occuring.
